1. Shut Off the Power or Gas
Safety first! If you have an electric water heater, turn off the breaker immediately to prevent electrical shorts or shocks. If you have a gas unit, turn the gas control valve to the "OFF" position.
2. Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate the cold water shut-off valve on top of the water heater (or the main home water valve if needed) and turn it clockwise until fully closed to stop more water from feeding the leak.
3. Contain & Drain Excess Water
Use towels, buckets, or a wet/dry vac to mop up standing water and prevent structural damage. If safe, attach a garden hose to the drain valve to redirect remaining water outside or to a floor drain.
4. Call Professional Help
Identify where the leak is originating (valves, fittings, or tank body). Take photos for reference and contact a licensed plumber immediately to inspect and determine if repair or replacement is needed.
